Site Narrative:
Carbon tetrachloride and nitrate were detected at concentrations below the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) in a lawn and garden well near Beattie in 1997. A Site Reconnaissance Evaluation (SRE) was conducted at the site in October of 1998. During the SRE, carbon tetrachloride was not detected in any private wells; however, the contaminant was detected in the soil at the former Commodity Credit Corporation/United States Department of Agriculture (CCC/USDA) grain storage facility at 33.3 micrograms per kilograms (?g/kg). Throughout the duration of the SRE, much of the CCC/USDA facility was a planted wheat field; KDHE was unable to collect samples from this area. Field screening analysis of nitrates indicated concentrations below MCL in two private wells. No groundwater samples were collected during the SRE due to Geoprobe refusal at 44 feet below ground surface. Groundwater samples were collected from one private well at the site in September 2006; carbon tetrachloride was not detected in the sample. Nitrate, as nitrogen, was detected at a concentration of 3.2 milligrams per liter (mg/L), below the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency?s Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) of 10 mg/L.

In January 2012 KDHE requested CCC/USDA develop a sampling plan to resample private wells near former CCC/USDA grain bin Sites in Kansas where no monitoring program currently exists. CCC/USDA requested that KDHE perform the sampling, and KDHE prepared/approved a Private Well Sampling Plan in December 2012 for the Site. KDHE implemented the CCC/USDA-sponsored Private Well Sampling Plan for the Site in February 2013, and was able to sample one private well. Carbon tetrachloride was not detected in the sample collected. Investigation WP approved with a request to conduct soil sampling at locations where kdhe found CT detection during site evaluation.
